If I were asked “What is the most thing that could lead into a conflict among residents of a boarding house?” I would answer… “Clothesline!”
Why? Because when I was a university student and lived in one of the student boarding house in Depok, scrambling the clothesline is our daily routine…
There were nearly 30 people who lived in the dorm, but there were only 3 pieces clotheslines provided. Regarding to (Because of ) the limitation, my friend, Ayu and I agreed to share to buy a clothesline which would be used by us interchangeably (by turn ) (it was mean that we must had different schedule of laundry day). What Ayu and I had done, followed by a few friends of us. Nevertheless, most of residents still had expectation to use the existing clotheslines or even borrow the clothesline which we had bought before.
Actually, Ayu and I didn’t mind if they borrowed our clothesline. However, the most annoying thing was… many of them frequently used our clothesline without prior permission!!!! So, we often had to defer washing our clothes because it was already used by someone else, or even when our clothes were hung there and started to dry up, they tucked their wet clothes in the midst of ours and made it wet again. It would be more sucks if they stacked their underwear on top of ours … #&%!!!
Oftentimes I heard the clothesline’s owner yelled out loudly "Who use my clothesline? I want to hang up my clothes!". She must be lucky if there was a claim, but it rarely happened. I didn’t knew why, maybe the actress weren’t in place or she pretended not to hear it. Typically, if then the owner gone, that clothes then moved to another clothesline (and made another owner getting crazy hahaha…)
It really bothered, didn’t it? I couldn’t understand why they didn’t want to buy their own clothesline like ours. It was cost only Rp15.000,-, or Rp7.500 if they shared with others. I knew they could afford it. Most of them came from wealthy family and usually bought new piece of clothes every month, so why they could not spent their money to another important one? Nonsense if they said that it was difficult to find places to buy the clothesline because the seller regularly walking through our boarding house.
Because this problem recurred again and again, one of the clothesline’s owner then always removed the top of the clothesline and hide it in her room hahaha... What a great idea!!!!
Whaw...old days reminiscent. Thanks Ms. OW. It reminds me to my student days where we experienced the same problem...
